According to NASS: Scattered heavy rain and snow received across much of Montana last week helped to reduce the drought like conditions, according to the Mountain Regional Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, USDA. Reporters in Powder River County reported extremely dry conditions with heavy insect presents the past week. Topsoil moisture conditions were 57 percent adequate to surplus, down from the previous year at 86 percent. Subsoil moisture conditions were 40 percent adequate to surplus. Corn plantings continued, with an estimated 64 percent of the crop planted, behind both the previous year and 5-year average of 85 percent and 83 percent, respectively. Planting of dry edible beans lagged this week, with an estimated 78 percent of the crop planted, behind last year at 89 percent and the 5-year average of 85 percent. Forty percent of dry beans have emerged. Durum wheat planting progressed significantly, with an estimated 89 percent of the crop planted, ahead of both the previous year and the 5-year average. The Treasure state in the last 2 weeks has seen record late season snowfalls now situated to see from below 32F (0C) to tomorrow seeing 100F (37C). A 68F temperature swing can affect the crop in a variety of ways, rapid evaporation, and frost damage being the concern. We saw improved moisture conditions especially in the golden triangle area, but conditions are set to digress rapidly.

Securing small grains is seeing some of the most challenging conditions in the last decade. Feed markets are tying up any overage producers have due to the price of corn in relation to small grains. As all eyes and conversations lead to Chinese purchases if the pace will continue. The Chinese purchases are affecting every commodity, with feed barley heading north with favorable picked up on the farm prices and wheat being considered a feed product as well in feed lot areas. Securing your future supply is dependent on your opinion of future Chinese activity and crop conditions in the northern plains. For barley you should be looking at securing 2022 crop to guarantee farmers will plant the acreage you are looking for, as most of the 2021 crop is already priced. Spring and Winter wheat may be seeing an increase in protein content with a more limited supply may generate wider premiums to compete with feed prices. No matter what you are looking for, there is no better time than now to secure future contracts.
